Stigma Maryati Struggle Against Terrorists Following from Afghanistan

Melbourne - Maryati and her husband, Jack Thomas, managed to regroup after Thomas released because no proven joined al-Qaeda. However, though it was able to regroup and return to Australia, Maryati can not live in peace.

Media already pinned the stigma of 'terrorist' to Jack Thomas. Maryati family had to fight to prove that they are not terrorists.

"The problem we are Muslims and at that time there was given tendency. There is an assumption when you are Muslim and you are in Afghanistan, then certainly you are a terrorist. That is absolutely not true," said Maryati while sharing stories with AFP facilitated Australia Plus ABC International ,

In fact, Thomas had a clear legal status, he was not a terrorist and is not a member of Al Qaeda. However, to convince the people around it is a difficult thing.

Luckily, Maryati live in a neighborhood with neighbors who are very liberal-minded. He never had an attack either verbally or physically after returning from Afghanistan.

"Luckily my children are not affected. There was just a stigma, that we are Muslims and we are in Afghanistan at the time, we were branded as terrorists. We fight to court until the Supreme Court in Canberra," said a woman from Makassar who had become citizens Australia.

Inconvenience to be felt Maryati is continuously stalked by reporters. His life seemed to be continually monitored wherever he goes. However, Maryati never intend to move house.

"My life at that time as it continues to be monitored all the time. The media chase for an interview. It happened for several years," said Maryati.

"But in public, I do not feel a big change. I'd never had an attack, not on the bully, not ostracized. Even I never moved. We feel fine," he said.

Maryati is the most important thing for her children. During her three children are not bothered, Maryati will not feel worried.

Post-incident, Maryati children go to school as usual. They'll also be able to play and never get scorn from his friends at school. Maryati freelance anything, kosher, sometimes also be a gardener.

Indeed, it must be faced Maryati was her husband who choose to be at home a lot. Thomas's face already plastered in various media and busy discussed as a terrorist. Thus, after returning to Australia, Thomas opted for more in the house.

"My husband finally after return many were inside the house, because you know when it's sticking out, his face exposed in all media. But when a neighbor asked us to tell the story, we definitely tell. A lot of people whose minds are open," he explained.

Maryati tell, the Australian government did not give the 'attention' special to him. He still could get a job and receive rights as a citizen. There is no difference at all with others.

Now, Maryati and his family have been living a normal life like other people. He was very grateful, the surrounding environment to understand that her husband is not a terrorist and that they can still mingle with the people.

"I still can drive, kids still go to school as usual. I'm still working. We did not feel there was a big change. I also did not have problems finding a job," said Maryati followed by a smile.
